Before you book

St Peter's Basilica Dome ticket questions that affect what you should buy

Use these checks before choosing between official St Peter's Basilica Dome tickets and partner products.

Stairs or lift: which St Peter's dome ticket should I buy?

The full climb has 551 steps. The lift takes you to the terrace, but 320 steps remain to the top, so both tickets involve a long climb. Officially, the lift adds €5 per adult.

The lift saves effort but not the final climb, and the dome is not wheelchair accessible.

St Peter's Basilica: the dome

Can children climb St Peter's dome?

The official package recommends a minimum age of 6, and under-18s must be with an adult. The basilica says the climb may be challenging for small children.

With young children, consider visiting the basilica alone, which is free to enter.

St Peter's Basilica: dome with lift

Can I change or refund a St Peter's dome ticket?

Official dome tickets are personal, non-refundable and cannot be changed. The official package provides a refund only if extraordinary liturgical requirements cancel the visit.

If your plans may change, check a partner's cancellation terms before you book; many partner tours here offer free cancellation.
